Prosecutors allege that Kennedy, a redshirt freshman from nearby Muskegon, killed Jones while robbing him of a phone and money. Kennedy was identified Friday as a person of interest. Police are looking for another person in connection with the shooting.
Prosecutors told AP they don’t know if Kennedy, 20, has an attorney yet.
“It’s a devastating loss for our university,” coach Steve Hawkins said in a postgame press conference Saturday. “It’s a devastating tragedy for everybody involved. Lives were changed forever. We’re very, very respectful of that, and we’re very shook by the whole thing.”
Kennedy averaged just more than seven minutes per game this season and appeared in all eight games.
