Beginning Feb. 10, more than 3,200 dogs from as many as 202 breeds and varieties will gather at the Westminster Kennel Club to compete in the name of puppy preeminence. This year’s agility contest will feature a Westminster-record 29 mixed-breed dogs, about 9 percent of that competition field.

Dog Show controversies and responses
While Westminster annually faces backlash and protests from animal-rights activists who oppose dog breeding, show organizers this year are attempting to emphasize purebred fanciers’ commitment to dogs. A new award will recognize breed clubs for rescuing their breed’s dogs when needed. The first winners will be supporters of the bearded collie, English cocker spaniel and great Pyrenees.
2017 Westminster Dog Show winners
Last year a German Shepherd named Rumor won Best in Show at the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It was the second win for a dog of his breed in the competition’s history. He also won best herder.
